In grades two through five, the Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District offers an Academically Independent (AI) Program designed to challenge the intellectually and academically advanced student through a multidimensional teaching approach involving accelerated and enriched curricula and course content. AI is intended to meet the needs of students who have the prerequisite mathematics and English language arts knowledge to skip to content that is a grade level or more above their chronological peers. This self-contained classroom program addresses the needs of gifted students who require instruction beyond that which can be provided through differentiation within a grade-level classroom.
In grade five, the district also offers advanced students content-specific Enrichment “E” Program class sections in mathematics and English language arts where students attend accelerated and enriched classes for one or both of these subject areas depending upon individual student abilities. The curriculum of the grade 5 E Program classes mirrors the mathematics and English language arts curriculum of the AI program.
The Parent Information Night meeting is intended to provide an overview of the 2-5 AI program and grade 5 E classes, and to review the process and criteria for program admission. Online registration for AI/E Program placement consideration will be available beginning Tuesday, January 5, 2021 and will close Wednesday, February 3, 2021. Students who are not registered during this window will not be considered for program placement. Links for online registration will appear on the BRRSD website, the Special Programs page, and the homepages of each of the district’s primary schools.
Please note that students applying for AI Program placement consideration will be administered the Remote Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) on Saturday, February 20, 2021. Grade 5 E applicants do not need to take the CogAT. More information regarding Remote CogAT administration will be sent to AI applicants after February 3, 2021.
This notification has been sent to all parents/guardians of students in grades one through four. This notification has not been initiated by any preliminary screening of data or teacher input. Students currently enrolled in the AI Program who are in good standing will automatically be eligible to continue in the program for the next school year without additional registration/consideration. Also, grade four students in good standing in the accelerated mathematics class will progress into E Mathematics for grade five and do not need to be registered for grade 5 E Mathematics. If these students are seeking grade 5 AI Program placement consideration, then registration is required.
