Ike week of respect

A celebration of the Week of Respect was held daily at the Eisenhower Intermediate School.

But on one day, Thursday, October 10, there was a higher dosage of celebration by staff members who were loyal fans of the New York Mets—and some depressed anguish experienced by the rooters of the Philadelphia Phillies.

On October 10, the theme of the day to honor the Week of Respect at Eisenhower was “Team Up Against Bullying.”

That message was supported loud and clear by the many students and staff wearing their favorite team/club/activity apparel.

Eisenhower teachers Leigh Rousseau and Jackie Hurley proudly sported their Mets jerseys while fellow teacher John DeLong put on his Phillies jersey despite the result from the previous night.

On Wednesday evening, the Mets defeated the Phillies, 4-1, to advance to the National League Championship Series. The loss ended the season for the Phillies.

The positive attitude displayed by all three of these staff members is an indication of the commitment Eisenhower and the school district devoted to the Week of Respect.

The Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District and all public schools in New Jersey recognized the Week of Respect from Monday, October 7 through Friday, October 11.

The Week of Respect is in accordance with the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act, a New Jersey law that was signed into effect in 2011 to combat bullying in public schools.

The law requires that New Jersey public schools acknowledge the importance of social and emotional learning while emphasizing age-appropriate instruction that will focus on preventing harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB).

The themes for the other days of the week at Eisenhower were:

Monday, October 7: Blue clothing was worn to BlueUp for World Day of Bullying Prevention Day.

Tuesday, October 8: Favorite color clothing was the attire to show respect to yourself and others while showing UNITY In Our DIVERSITY.

Wednesday, October 9 produced crazy socks and crazy hair worn to celebrate how Our Unique Differences Make Us Stronger.

The week was capped on Friday, October 11 when the apparel was Eisenhower Spirit Wear or garb that featured the school colors blue and yellow. Together We SOAR and Show Respect for Our School, Community, Ourselves and Others.

The daily morning announcements were delivered during the Week of Respect by the following Eisenhower students.
